The Stained Glass of St Mary’s Church Nantwich

£3.95

This booklet is the second in a series marking the collaboration of Nantwich Museum and St Mary’s church. It incorporates all of the text from a previous leaflet written by R.E. Pritchard and is supplemented by further text and illustrations of all of the stained glass to be found at present in St Mary’s church. The first two pages give an idea of the volume and colour of heraldic arms of local families that at one time adorned the church windows. Luckily these were faithfully recorded by the first Randle Holme in 1572 and again later in 1663 by Elias Ashmole, details of which can be found in James Hall’s History of Nantwich.
The stained glass can be classified into medieval, Victorian and modern with by far the majority coming from the Victorian period. Each window has its own message to tell, giving testament to the enduring Christian faith in Nantwich.
The route starts in the south porch and takes the viewer in an anticlockwise direction around the church through the north aisle, north transept, chancel, south transept and finishing in the south aisle.
