Thomas Dunning was a Chartist, and President of the Shoemakers’ Society of Nantwich and a Newsagent.
Chartism was a workers’ movement for political reform and was named after the People’s Charter presented to Parliament in 1838. During the period between 1838 and 1857 the Chartists organised three petitions, signed by millions of the working class, in an effort to obtain male suffrage.
