The Wonders of Colour: exhibition and activities

We live in a very colourful world. But how much of this colour is natural and how much comes from man-made sources?

Using objects from our collection and stories from the town’s history, ‘The Wonders of Colour’ will illustrate the impact of technology on dyeing, painting, stained glass and food colour.

The exhibition, starting on Tue 14 Oct 2025, will include a range of other activities:

– a set of six talks on Thursday evenings throughout October and November, starting with “Seeing Colour: More than meets the eye” on 16 Oct. To view the full set of talks and how to book please visit the Events page

– Museum trails featuring objects connected with colours

– drop-in Halloween workshops for families on Wed 29 and Thur 30 Oct

– a talk by Cheshire artist Iain Davidson on “Harry’s Wall: Colourful Contemporary Culture” on Sat 1 Nov

– a screening of the film “Loving Vincent”, about the painter Vincent van Gogh, on Sat 15 Nov

The exhibition continues a long-standing theme of the Museum to bring to life the history of science subjects. We are grateful to the Royal Society of Chemistry for financial support.
