The Civil War took place at a time when the availability of information exceeded that of previous decades and centuries. Literacy was increasing and printed documents were more widely available as a result of the mechanisation brought about by the printing press. The War itself was the catalyst for new publications to emerge and communication channels to be expanded and exploited.
